Nicholson fired home from outside the box in the 84th minute to grab victory for the Gulls, who had fought back from behind with Nathan Craig quickly cancelling out Deon Burton's early opener.

Second-placed Port Vale failed to take full advantage as they were held to a 1-1 draw at Burton. Jordan Chapell opened the scoring for the hosts on 73 minutes but Ben Williamson equalised two minutes later.

Fleetwood Town's impressive progress continued as they grabbed a 2-1 win at Chesterfield. Steven Gillespie put the visitors ahead early, and after Tendayi Darikwa's equaliser, Fleetwood won it in injury time when Chris Atkinson scored an own goal from close range.
