Reigning champion Pumas failed to qualify for the end-of-season playoffs in the Mexican Apertura season after a 1-1 home draw with Tijuana on Sunday.

Pumas needed a win to make the eight-team playoffs and have a chance of defending the title, and took the lead through a 25-yard (meter) free kick from Javier Cortes in the 11th minute. However, Juan Pablo Santiago equalized for Tijuana in the 52nd.

Also Sunday, Tigres made it through with a 1-0 win against Puebla to end the regular season in third place.

Tigres joined league leader Chivas, Cruz Azul, Santos Laguna, Chiapas, Pachuca, Morelia and Queretaro in the playoffs that will decide the Apertura champion.

Chivas secured top spot with a 2-2 draw against Pachuca, while Cruz Azul finished second after a 3-1 win in the Mexico City derby against America, both on Saturday.

In other results, it was: Morelia 1, Chiapas 0; Monterrey 3, Atlante 2; Queretaro 3, UAG 0; Santos 3, Atlas 0; and San Luis 5, Toluca 1.

The draw for Pumas all but guaranteed Tigres a spot in the playoffs, but the Monterrey-based team secured a higher finish after Jesus Duenas got the only goal against Puebla in the 26th.

The Pumas result also ensured that Queretaro qualified for the playoffs for the first time in its history.

Three second-half goals secured a comfortable win for Queretaro against UAG on Saturday, with Adolfo Bautista getting the first in the 61st, Israel Martinez scoring six minutes later and Sergio Ponce notching the third in the 82nd.

In other Saturday matches, Pachuca came from behind twice against Chivas, with Enrique Esqueda getting a goal in each half, including a last-minute equalizer.

Marco Fabian had given Chivas the lead in the 21st minute and striker Erick Torres made it five goals in his last five games by scoring in the 61st.

Chivas goalkeeper Luis Michel and Pachuca's Javier Munoz were both sent off in the 50th after Michel threw the ball in Munoz's face, sparking a scuffle between the two.

Meanwhile, Emanuel Villa headed home in the first minute for Cruz Azul and added a second in the 74th as Cruz Azul took command in the so-called ''young derby'' against America.

Javier Orozco scored Cruz Azul's other goal in the 62nd, while Daniel Montenegro curled in a free kick from 25 yards (meters) for America in the 80th.

In Torreon, Santiago Hoyos put Santos ahead against Atlas in the 27th, but was sent off in the 64th.

Carlos Morales and Oribe Peralta added late goals for the home side after Atlas goalkeeper Miguel Pinto received a red card to even the numbers in the 85th, forcing outfield player Lucas Ayala to keep goal.

Elsewhere, Jose Gonzalez opened the scoring as San Luis thrashed Toluca, with Ismael Blanco, Wilmer Aguirre and two goals from Alfredo Moreno completing the scoring for the home side.

Chilean Ivan Alonso got an 83rd-minute consolation goal for Toluca, making him the top scorer in the regular season with 11 goals.

In Monterrey, Argentine winger Cesar Delgado scored once in each half against Atlante, with Jesus Zavala getting the other in the 74th.

American midfielder Sonny Guadarrama and Venezuelan striker Giancarlo Maldonado netted for Atlante.

In Friday's game, a goal from Miguel Sabah in the 65th gave Morelia victory against Jaguares, in a result that qualified both teams for the playoffs ahead of the weekend results.

Miguel Martinez was sent off for Jaguares in the 52nd, with Morelia's Joel Huiqui also receiving a red card in the 90th.
