Terry: Rooney has more to give

Rooney scored his 27th and 28th goals for his country during last night's 3-0 win over Bulgaria in Sofia. He is already joint eighth in England's all-time scoring list, but Terry feels the Manchester United star has many more years ahead of him for his country. Terry said: "Wayne has been excellent and still at the forefront of this England side. "Although everyone keeps talking about younger players and older players, Wayne still has an awful lot to give over the next 10 years, I'm very confident of that. "He never settles for anything less than winning. That's the kind of character he is, even in training. "He's a good character to have around the camp as well. His enthusiasm rubs off on the younger players. "Wayne has shown some great early form for Manchester United and continued that on Friday evening." Chris Smalling impressed at right-back in Sofia on his debut, but is hoping his long term future for England and Manchester United is at centre-back. He said: "I was hoping I would be in with a shout to play although I didn't see the opportunity coming so quick. "I was hoping if I could get a good run with United, it would happen at the end of the season, or maybe the start of next season. "I've been playing at right-back for my club this year so it is different. "To be playing for United and England in a different position is obviously hard and I'm learning with each game. "But hopefully in years to come I'll have many games at centre-back because that's where I see my position. That's where I see my future lies. "The aim is to go on and challenge Rio (Ferdinand). I see it (right-back) as a temporary thing." Smalling has welcomed the decision of United manager Sir Alex Ferguson and England boss Fabio Capello to give youth its opportunity at club and international level. He said: "There is a new breed coming through and it's great to see the young lads given a chance. "Sir Alex Ferguson has given all the young players a nice boost by playing them early on. "You can definitely see we are enjoying our football at the moment." When asked if a player good enough to play for United is good enough for England, Smalling said: "That definitely shows and that shows when Fabio has picked his squads and long may that continue. "For some of us young players, playing at top clubs, to be able to come abroad in hostile atmospheres like this, it is things that we dream of. "People ask are we the new 'golden generation'? It is a big billing to live up to but if the manager keeps picking us, and we keep putting in performances, I think time will tell."
