Ryan Taylor's spectacular shot from the edge of the area earned Newcastle a 2-1 win over Everton on Saturday that preserved the Magpies' unbeaten start to the Premier League season.

Taylor's dipping half-volley in the 29th minute proved to be the difference between the sides and took Newcastle to 25 points from 11 matches.

Taylor's goal made it 2-0 after John Heitinga's own-goal had put the home side ahead in the 12th.

Jack Rodwell got a goal back for Everton in first-half injury time but, despite losing Yohan Cabaye and Sylvain Marveaux to injury, Newcastle held out in the second half to maintain the Premier League's best defensive record.

The Magpies have conceded just eight goals.

''It was one of those games today where we got disrupted,'' manager Alan Pardew said. ''We lost two key players, but the guys who came on did well. It shows another side of us, that we have strength in depth.

''It was one of our best defensive performances. We had that disruption and we lost our rhythm but we kept ball and were clever.''

Newcastle went ahead from a move started when Steven Taylor laid the ball to Danny Guthrie, who passed to fullback Danny Simpson charging up the right. Simpson's cross was heading for Leon Best but Heitinga intercepted and touched it past goalkeeper Tim Howard and into the net.

Taylor hit his goal after controlling Rodwell's clearing header with his chest, smashing the ball over Howard and in off the bar, before Rodwell made amends by heading in Royston Drenthe's near-post corner.
