The 26-year-old's versatility has perhaps hampered his hopes of holding down a regular spot as he has been used in a variety of roles by the Magpies. Since arriving from Wigan in February 2009, Taylor has not been given a run in his favoured position of right-back. But the former Tranmere man is hoping that will change after manager Alan Pardew gave him a chance to impress in the 0-0 friendly draw with Sporting Kansas City. "To be able to try to show the gaffer what I can do at right-back was great the other night," Taylor told the Chronicle. "I'm one of those players who has been pushed here, there and everywhere in the last couple of years. "I've covered in different positions, and it was nice to show the gaffer what I can do at right-back. "I've got two years left on my deal, but I'm hoping, come the middle of the season, I'll have shown the gaffer what I can do. "I want to be here, and I want to play. Kansas City was a good start. "It's difficult for someone like me who has that label as a utility player. I want people to know me as someone who can play in a certain position. "I've got to keep working hard in pre-season, and see what comes of it." Taylor's versatility could cost him again as he may be shifted into midfield for Saturday's game against Orlando City to cover for the injury to Hatem Ben Arfa. But he is determined to make the most of any opportunity to boost his match fitness in Florida. "It was touching 100 degrees at kick-off, and I've never played in that before," Taylor added. "There was just no air - it was so hot! But it was a good work-out. I'm sure the lads will benefits from that. "Come the end of the game, my feet were burning and my boots were burning, but I was buzzing to get 90 minutes in the first major game in pre-season."
