Switzerland draws 2-2 with Ukraine
Switzerland captain Alex Frei silenced his home critics by scoring twice Wednesday before a Ukraine team watched from the stands by Italian coach Marcello Lippi leveled to earn a 2-2 draw in a friendly.
Frei has been a recent target for abuse by Swiss fans, but scored with a 40th-minute free kick and from close range in the 62nd.
He extended his national scoring record to 42 in likely his last international at home. The FC Basel forward cited the fans' attitude toward him this month when announcing he will concentrate on club football after Switzerland's next three away matches.
Ukraine fought back each time through a fluke deflection off Oleksandr Aliyev in the 48th, then Yvgenii Konoplianka's spectacular 75th-minute strike from distance.
Lippi, a World Cup winner, was present at the Stade de Geneve, fueling speculation he will be hired as coach of the 2012 European Championship co-host.
Ukraine officials had denied Italian media reports linking the 62-year-old Lippi with a job currently held by interim coach Yuri Kalitvintsev.
Lippi guided Italy to win the 2006 World Cup, then stood down before returning two years later. He left the Azzurri a second time following a first-round exit at the World Cup in June.
Ukraine qualifies automatically for Euro 2012 as co-host with Poland.
