Sweden defender Daniel Majstorovic will miss the European Championship after he injured his left knee during training on Tuesday.
The Swedish Football Association said the Celtic player hurt his cruciate ligament in a clash with midfielder Anders Svensson as the team prepared for Wednesday's friendly against Croatia.
''According to my judgment it's an injury that will have to be operated on and it normally means a convalescence of around eight months,'' Sweden team doctor Leif Svard said.
The 34-year-old Majstorovic accepted he would not play at the European Championship beginning June 8, but said he was not considering retirement.
''I've looked forward to the European Championship for so long and of course it hurts to realize that I will miss it,'' he said. ''I'm going to do everything I can to be able to come back as soon as possible. I still feel as though I have a lot to give on the football field and I don't want to give up on my career just because of this.''
Majstorovic was taken to hospital along with striker John Guidetti who was also hurt during the training session in Croatia.
''This hurts, for all of us, but above all for Daniel,'' Sweden coach Erik Hamren said. ''This means of course that he will be away for a long time.''
Feyenoord forward Guidetti was not seriously injured and could make his national team debut in Wednesday's friendly, the Swedish Football Association said.
Sweden begins its Euro 2012 campaign against co-host Ukraine on June 11. England and France make up the rest of their group.
