Sunderland lift Adam Johnson suspension, police probe continues
SUNDERLAND, England -- English Premier League club Sunderland has lifted midfielder Adam Johnson's suspension which was imposed after he was arrested on suspicion of sexual activity with a 15-year-old girl.
The announcement came after the 27-year-old Johnson's police bail was extended on Tuesday until April 23.
Johnson was suspended after being arrested around two weeks ago by the Durham Constabulary, which is based near Sunderland.
But Sunderland says after discussions with the Professional Footballers' Association, that Johnson ''is entitled to recommence his duties with the club while the legal process continues.''
The northeast club added in a statement that Johnson is resuming training with the team, which has a new manager this week after Dick Advocaat replaced Gus Poyet.
Durham police say their investigation ''remains very much live and ongoing.''
