Stuttgart fired coach Christian Gross on Wednesday after a dismal start to the season that left it last in the Bundesliga.

Stuttgart made the decision to remove the Swiss coach with immediate effect after a ''detailed analysis of the sporting situation.''

Gross replaced Markus Babbel 10 months ago, when Stuttgart was also in the relegation zone. Gross rejuvenated the team and Stuttgart qualified for the Europa League, only to plummet again this season.

Stuttgart said Gross' assistant Jens Keller will coach the team when it travels to second-to-last Schalke this weekend.

Stuttgart has lost six of its first seven Bundesliga matches and has only three points.

Gross is the first Bundesliga coach to be fired this season.

Stuttgart went into the season with high expectations but the departure of Sami Khedira for Real Madrid and several injuries have affected the club.
