St. Ettiene holds surging Montpeiller
Montpellier salvaged a 1-1 draw at Saint-Etienne on Sunday to remain in second place in the French league behind leader Paris Saint-Germain.
PSG can increase its lead to five points if it beats Bordeaux later Sunday.
Romania playmaker Banel Nicolita headed in a cross from Fabien Lemoine to give Saint-Etienne the lead in the 32nd minute. But Montpellier midfielder Joris Marveaux took a headed pass from Olivier Giroud to score from close range in the 57th.
Also Sunday, it was: Sochaux 2, Lyon 1; Rennes 1, Valenciennes 1; Lorient 2, Ajaccio 0; Marseille 2, Nice 0; Caen 3, Dijon 0; Nancy 2, Brest 1; and Auxerre 2, Toulouse 0.
In Sochaux, the hosts opened the scoring in the 10th with an own-goal from Lyon fullback Aly Cissokho, who mis-hit his clearance kick. Lyon forward Alexandre Lacazette leveled in the 14th by nodding home a cross from Bafetimbi Gomis.
But Algeria midfielder Ryad Boudebouz gave mid-table Sochaux the victory by converting a penalty in the 43rd after Cissokho had fouled him.
Lyon remained in fourth place despite the loss.
Winger Jires Kembo-Ekoko put Rennes ahead in the 21st with a curling shot into the top corner. Valenciennes midfielder Remi Gomis equalized with a header in the 29th.
In Lorient, forward Yann Jouffre fired home a long-range drive in the 63rd to go 1-0 up against Ajaccio before Gilles Sunu beat the offside trap to add a second in the 82nd.
Marseille left it late against Nice. Ghana forward Jordan Ayew headed in a cross from Loic Remy in the 72nd and Remy sealed the win in stoppage time with a spot kick after Drissa Diakite had fouled Marseille winger Andre Ayew.
Marseille climbed to eighth place to make up ground in the race for a Champions League spot.
In Caen, midfielder Frederic Bulot scored a goal and had two assists for the hosts against Dijon.
Defender Gregory Leca powered home a header in the 36th off a corner from Bulot.
Bulot doubled the lead by beating goalkeeper Baptiste Reynet in the 66th before setting up Pierre-Alain Frau for the third in the 72nd.
In Nancy, South Korea forward Jung Jo-gook scored in the 64th with an assist from Reynald Lemaitre.
Brest midfielder Benoit Lesoimier leveled with a curling shot in the 85th but Romania forward Daniel Niculae outpaced the Brest defense to score the winner in the 87th.
In Auxerre, Yaya Sanogo scored from close range for the hosts in the 69th, and Roy Contout made it 2-0 by taking a pass from Kamel Chafni to unleash a powerful strike in the 88th.
On Saturday, defending champion Lille drew 1-1 with Evian.
