The Spanish football league will vote Friday on whether to suspend matches the weekend of Dec. 12-13 to protest a government plan to eliminate a tax break for high-income players.
The governing Socialist party wants to eliminate the so-called "Beckham Law" which allows foreign players who earn more than €600,000 ($905,000) to pay only 24 percent tax.
If the proposed change goes through, those players will pay 43 percent.
The law was named after former Real Madrid player David Beckham, who arrived shortly after it came into effect in 2004.
League officials have warned that the higher tax could make top players leave to play in other countries.
