World champion Spain and Argentina will play a friendly in September at River Plate's stadium in Buenos Aires.
Spanish federation head Angel Maria Villa said Friday on Buenos Aires radio that the match will be played on Sept. 7, four days after the team plays a qualifier for the 2012 European Championship at Liechtenstein.
''A national team has to keep competing and going to Buenos Aires will be a pleasure,'' Villar said. ''It's a true classic between two great sides.''
Argentina coach Diego Maradona is yet to say if he will stay with the national team. He has been offered a new four-year deal that will keep him in charge through to the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.
Maradona is expected to talk about the new contract next week with Argentine federation president Julio Grondona. Argentina also plays Ireland in a friendly on Aug. 11 in Dublin.
The match is being held during the 200th year of Argentina's independence from colonial power Spain. Mexico is also celebrating it 200th year of independence, and Spain has a match in Mexico on Aug. 11.
