Southampton defender Clyne undergoing medical at Liverpool

Southampton defender Nathaniel Clyne is currently undergoing a medical on Merseyside ahead of his £12.5million ($19.6m) move to Liverpool.

The 24-year-old England right-back has returned from holiday and is in the city to complete the final stages of his transfer.

If everything goes to plan then Clyne is likely to be announced as the club's sixth summer signing on Wednesday, when the transfer window officially opens.

Arrangements are still being made to complete the deal for Brazil international Roberto Firmino as his participation in the Copa America ended with exit to Paraguay on Saturday.

But come July 1 the club will confirm the arrivals of Manchester City midfielder James Milner, Burnley striker Danny Ings, Bolton goalkeeper Adam Bogdan and, most likely, that of Clyne also.

Charlton defender Joe Gomez has already signed a five-year deal, the Reds having snapped up the England Under-19 international for £3.5million ($5.5m), but spending this summer is down on 12 months ago when manager Brendan Rodgers splashed out £110 million ($173m) on eight players to counter-balance the £75million ($118m) departure of Luis Suarez.

This time around Rodgers has been slightly more frugal with £22million ($34.6m) spent on Firmino, which could rise to £29million ($45.6m) with add-ons, and £3.5million ($5.5m) on Gomez with a compensation fee for Ings yet to be determined but likely to be upwards of £5million ($7.9m).

The Reds boss is still in the market for a striker to complete the majority of his summer business and Aston Villa's Christian Benteke remains the priority.

However, the stumbling block is the Belgium international's release clause of £32.5million ($51m). Liverpool view that as too pricey but retain a degree of optimism a deal can be struck for a fee slightly more manageable.
