South Africa erases world's doubts

There were plenty of VIPs in attendance as well, including more than a dozen heads of state and various celebrities ranging from South African-born Charlize Theron to Morgan Freeman, who played Mandela in the movie ‘Invictus.’

Overall, the final day of the 2010 World Cup was a celebration not just of the coronation of the new world champion, but of the completion of a resoundingly successful World Cup for the host nation. All the doubts about South Africa’s ability to be a good World Cup host have melted away over the course of four memorable weeks.

As the crowd poured out of Soccer City on Sunday night, a group of South Africans sang the South African national anthem loudly and proudly. They walked away feeling proud about their country, as well they should.
