Real Sociedad has fired coach Martin Lasarte after the Spanish league club only just managed to stave off relegation.

Sociedad's 1-1 draw with Getafe kept it in the topflight after Deportivo La Coruna lost to drop down. Sociedad's impressive start in the first half of the season was quickly forgotten as it stumbled to a 15th-place finish.

The 50-year-old Uruguayan coach took charge of the San Sebastian-based club last season and guided it to a second-place finish in the second division to earn promotion.

Marca newspaper reported that former Argentina and Chile coach Marcelo Bielsa was a candidate for the post.
