The decision to call off the game at the DW Stadium was made on the advice of Superintendent Stuart Ellison of Greater Manchester Police after "freak weather conditions in the town overnight". The Latics brought in snow ploughs and gritters to try and get the game on, but 10 inches of snow fell overnight, making the surrounding areas extremely hazardous to supporters. The playing surface is fine, but no public transport is running and there are also motorway closures in the area. The Championship games between Portsmouth and Scunthorpe and Cardiff and Burnley have also fallen foul of the weather and there are numerous postponements in the lower leagues. North of the border, the fixture between Hamilton and Celtic has joined the list of SPL casualties because of water damage at New Douglas Park. Full list of postponed matches: Premier League: Wigan v Aston Villa Championship: Cardiff v Burnley Portsmouth v Scunthorpe League One: Rochdale v Bournemouth Dagenham v Peterborough Walsall v Southampton Hartlepool v Charlton Leyton Orient v Plymouth Yeovil v Carlisle Brentford v Huddersfield Bristol Rovers v Colchester Milton Keynes Dons v Oldham Swindon v Tranmere League Two: Bury v Stevenage Accrington v Burton Albion Hereford v Macclesfield Cheltenham v Stockport Oxford Utd v Shrewsbury Aldershot v Lincoln City Port Vale v Barnet Crewe v Bradford Northampton v Morecambe SPL: Rangers v St Mirren Aberdeen v Motherwell St Johnstone v Dundee Utd Hamilton v Celtic
