Sevilla says striker Frederic Kanoute hurt his ankle after scoring both goals in the Andalucian club's 2-1 Copa del Rey victory over San Roque on Tuesday.

The Malian striker came off the bench in the second half to score a penalty and a header inside eight minutes to put Sevilla into the last 16 with an aggregate score of 3-1.

The club said Wednesday that Kanoute was injured after taking an ''awkward step.'' It did not reveal how long it expects Kanoute to be sidelined nor which ankle he injured.

The 34-year-old Kanoute has scored six goals in all competitions to take his career goal tally for Sevilla to 135 since his arrival from Tottenham in 2005.
