Sevilla beats Dortmund to earn points in Europe
Sevilla gained its first points in the Europa League with a 1-0 victory over 10-man Borussia Dortmund on Thursday.
Luca Cigarini's goal on the stroke of halftime proved enough for the Spanish side, which now has three points from two matches, the same as Dortmund. Paris St Germain tops Group J with six points, while Karpaty Lviv is last with zero points.
Dortmund started the game having won nine of its 10 matches in all competitions this season and Juergen Klopp's team dominated the first half. But the home side was caught out when Sevilla grabbed the lead two minutes into first half stoppage time.
Dortmund defender Neven Subotic cleared Martin Caceres's header on the line but the ball fell to the feet of Cigarini, who struck low into the left corner from about 10 meters (yards).
The Germans went a man down in the 50th minute when Marcel Schmelzer, whose foul had caused the free kick which led to Sevilla's goal and who had been booked for the incident, was shown a second yellow for diving in a challenge with Mouhamadou Dabo.
Dortmund nearly equalized in the 70th minute when Lucas Barrios sent Shinji Kawaga clear into the area, only for the Japanese midfielder's shot struck the left-hand post.
Luis Fabiano nearly doubled Sevilla's lead a minute later with a header that flew wide, but it took a block by Caceres just before the line in the 89th minute to deny Mats Hummels a headed equalizer.
The next Europa League games are on Oct. 21 with Dortmund hosting Paris St. Germain while Sevilla travels to Karpaty Lviv.
