The Serbian government has granted citizenship to Brazilian-born striker Cleverson Gabriel Cordova Cleo, who has been a top scorer for Partizan Belgrade.

The move is apparently designed to enable Cleo to play for Serbia in its qualifying campaign for the 2012 European Championship.

Serbia's next qualifier is against Estonia on Oct. 8. Four days later Serbia plays in Italy.

It was not immediately clear when Cleo could join. The 25-year-old striker signed for Partizan in 2009, after playing for rival Red Star Belgrade for a year.
