Serbia beats Bulgaria 1-0 in friendly
Nikola Zigic scored a late goal Wednesday to lead Serbia to a 1-0 win at Bulgaria in a friendly.
The 2.02-meter (6-foot-7 1/2) forward was at the edge of the box when he received a long pass and fired past the goalkeeper in the 80th minute.
Bulgaria dominated most of the game but couldn't avenge its humiliating 6-1 loss to Serbia in a friendly two years ago.
The best opportunity for the home side came when Parma striker Valeri Bojinov shot wide in the 29th minute after taking advantage of a mistake by defender Adem Ljajic.
Several long-range shots by Bulgarian pair Hristo Yanev and Ivelin Popov were saved by goalkeeper Bojan Jorgacevic.
Serbia was without injured midfielders Milos Krasic of Juventus and Zdravko Kuzmanovic of Stuttgart.
Serbia coach Vladimir Petrovic also left out Liverpool forward Milan Jovanovic and Inter Milan midfielder Dejan Stankovic, instead fielding several new players ahead of the 2012 European Championship qualifiers against Northern Ireland and Estonia next year.
