Schalke's Draxler to miss rest of year due to thigh surgery

GELSENKIRCHEN, Germany --

Schalke says its attacking midfielder Julian Draxler will miss the rest of the year because of a thigh injury.

Draxler partially tore a tendon in his right thigh and will have an operation.

The Germany international was injured in the first minute of Friday's 1-0 victory over Augsburg.

There are seven matches before the Bundesliga goes on its winter break and Schalke also has Champions League matches against Sporting, Chelsea and Maribor.

Draxler will also miss Germany's Euro 2016 qualifier against Gibraltar and a friendly against Spain later this month.
