Sampdoria returned to Serie A after a year's absence with a 1-0 win over Varese in the second leg of a Serie B playoff.

Nicola Pozzi scored in added time as Sampdoria won 4-2 on aggregate.

Pescara and Torino have already already promoted.

A last-minute winner secured the Serie B title for Pescara on the last day of the season, on goal difference, after it finished level on points and head-to-head record with Torino. Sampdoria finished sixth in the table to enter a playoff with the third-, fourth- and fifth-place teams.

In 2010-11, Sampdoria finished third last in Serie A after selling strikers Antonio Cassano and Giampaolo Pazzini midway through the season. Led by Roberto Mancini and Gianluca Vialli, the Genoa-based squad won the Serie A title in 1991.
