Rummenigge eyes historic treble

Bayern Munich chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge says victory in the DFB-Pokal and Champions League glory would cap a remarkable season.

Bayern have already won the Bundesliga, which was the priority given to coach Louis van Gaal when he took over last summer, and are still on course for an historic treble which would make them the most successful Bayern team of all time.

Not even the dominant Bayern of the 70s, of which Rummenigge was part, were able to win a treble.

"For the whole club, it would be an historic event," he told eurosport.de.

"Even the great team from the 70s, who won the European Cup three times, never managed the treble.

"But regardless of that, we have got to say that the current team has played a remarkable season and we have the chance to put the cherry on top."

Rummenigge does not expect Bayern to snub Saturday's final in Berlin in view of the arguably greater prize in Madrid a week later.

"I can only say to the players that, when you have worked so hard to reach the final, then you have got to do all you can to win it," he said.

"We have got to think in small steps and the first step is to win the DFB-Pokal.

"That is going to be hard enough, but I think we have a decent chance. Werder will want to win it as much as we do."
