Rooney, Heskey to lead English strike force vs. US
Robert Green will start in goal for England at the World Cup against the United States on Saturday and Emile Heskey will partner Wayne Rooney up front.
Everton's Tim Howard will start in goal for the U.S., and Oguchi Onyewu is paired in central defense with Jay DeMerit. Onyewu has not played a full 90 minutes since Oct. 10, four days before he injured his knee in the Americans' final World Cup qualifier.
England coach Fabio Capello had refused to disclose his first-choice goalkeeper for months and said he would only reveal the starting lineup to the team two hours before the Group C opener in Rustenburg, South Africa.
West Ham's Green, who played in eight of England's last 11 matches, started in favor of the inexperienced Joe Hart and the injury-prone David James.
Ledley King partnered John Terry in central defense, taking the place of Rio Ferdinand, whose World Cup was ended by a left knee injury. As expected, Glen Johnson and Ashley Cole are the full backs.
The central midfield partnership of Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard has been retained, with Capello opting for James Milner and Aaron Lennon on the flanks.
Steve Cherundolo will be at right back for the Americans and former Fulham defender Carlos Bocanegra on the left.
Michael Bradley and Ricardo Clark were to start in central midfield, with Fulham's Clint Dempsey and Landon Donovan, who spent part of last season on loan to Everton, on the wings.
Jozy Altidore, who scored just one Premier League goal while on loan at Hull last season, recovered from a sprained right ankle to start at forward with speedy Robbie Findley, who is still searching for his first international goal.
The U.S. is trying to bounce back from first-round elimination at the 2006 World Cup and replicate its 1-0 upset victory over England in the group phase of the 1950 tournament in Brazil.
England, which won its only world title in 1966, has reached the last two quarterfinals.
