Brendan Rodgers has promised to make Anfield a "cauldron" when Liverpool defend a 1-0 advantage in tonight's Europa League second leg third-round qualifier against Gomel.

Last week's first encounter saw Stewart Downing earn the Reds a deserved victory against last season's Belarusian Super Cup winners.

"It will be an honour for me to walk out at Anfield for my first game there," Rodgers told the official website. "It is going to be an incredible privilege for me but my focus will be to win the game.

"That will be the most important objective for me on the evening. I'll look to try and make Anfield a real cauldron of a place to come and play.

"I've been given an incredible welcome here. It's been phenomenal. From the outside looking in it was always that way; the passion from the fans and the city and it was a real iconic club. But once you're inside, it's even better than that.

"But while sentiment is important, it doesn't wash with me so much - I need to win games. This is a club that really has a destination; this is a club that you want to be at. We'll improve and get better as we go along."

However, Rodgers has sound fans not to expect fireworks against Gomel.

"Last week we were literally only four weeks into our pre-season before we had our first competitive game. And we've still got a lot of improvement to make. There's no question about that.

"If people are expecting us to be coming in after four weeks and to be playing fast, flowing, fluent, dynamic football then that won't be the case.

"It takes time. There's a lot of work that goes in to making a team play that way and so it's going to take longer than four weeks."

On the match Rodgers thinks it could be a difficult test despite his side carrying a lead from the first leg.

He said: "At this stage they are fitter than us, they've played 15 games so that match fitness is better. We tired towards the end but had that resilience to keep a clean sheet which you cannot underestimate.

"They make it difficult to play through them, sit deep and then spring forward so it's about making sure we have that tactical discipline."

Luis Suarez could make a rapid return for Liverpool despite only finishing his Olympic duties with Uruguay at the weekend but after signing a new long-term contract with the Anfield outfit, he declared his willingness to play.

Rodgers told the Liverpool Echo: "He had a bit of a break at the end of the season and he's been playing with Uruguay in some friendlies and at the Olympics, he's come back and looked really good in the last couple of days.

"I have no worries about the likes of Luis. He was in his pre-season, it just wasn't with us. We know he's class, he looks fit, looks strong and will be ready.

"I was one of the managers who thought the Olympics would be beneficial for players. Most were coming back around the same time, but with the Olympics basically what you had was he'd be doing his work there rather than with us.

"That was an opportunity for those players involved to come back maybe even at a better level because they'd be playing more competitive games."

Goalkeeper Jose Reina may be involved after missing last week's first leg after a delayed return for pre-season training.
