Arjen Robben celebrated his return to action as Bayern Munich defeated Qatar side Al-Wakrah 4-0 in a friendly match in the Gulf state.

New arrival Luiz Gustavo also played his first game for the Bavarians following his arrival from Hoffenheim as goals from Thomas Muller, Bastian Schweinsteiger, Daniel van Buyten and Hamit Altintop earned Louis van Gaal's side a comfortable win.

Thomas Kraft played in goal, hinting that a rumoured switch between the posts for the second half of the season with Hans-Jorg Butt dropping to the bench could well be true.

Elsewhere, Hamburg beat Ajax 4-2 in a more testing encounter with Ruud van Nistelrooy bagging a hat-trick and David Jarolim scoring the other goal.

Bundesliga strugglers Stuttgart picked up a 3-1 victory against their coach Bruno Labbadia's former club Greuther Furth with Pavel Pogrebnyak, Zdravko Kuzmanovic and Sven Schipplock scoring the goals.

Nurnberg continued to impress in their Turkish training camp as they beat the defending Turkish champions Bursaspor 1-0 while Hannover were thrashed 3-0 by Galatasaray.

Also in Turkey, Eintracht Frankfurt beat Bundesliga rivals Cologne on a penalty shoot-out to win the Antalya Cup while Freiburg defeated Swiss Super League outfit Thun 3-0.

Finally, Werder Bremen's woes continued with a 4-1 defeat to German second division side Duisburg, although the Bundesliga side did play with largely a reserve team.

The second half of the Bundesliga starts on Friday when league leaders Borussia Dortmund travel to third-placed Bayer Leverkusen looking to open up a 13-point gap at the top.
