New England Revolution goalkeeper Matt Reis has had surgery on his left knee.

Reis had a procedure to fix his quadriceps tendon Thursday at Massachusetts General Hospital.

The 34-year-old had rotator cuff surgery in December and has been rehabilitating since then. The shoulder injury is expected to keep him out 12-16 weeks. He should be recovered from the knee injury before then.

Reis led Major League Soccer in saves and save percentage while posting eight shutouts in 2009.

Recently acquired veteran Preston Burpo is expected to be the team's opening-day goalkeeper while Reis recovers.

The Revolution's season starts March 27 at the Los Angeles Galaxy.
