Italian media are reporting that AC Milan midfielder Mathieu Flamini has been scheduled for knee surgery and will be out for five months.
The France international sustained ligament damage during Sunday's Trofeo Berlusconi preseason match against Juventus.
While the start of the Serie A season has been delayed by a strike, defending champion Milan is already without several players.
Newly-signed left back Taye Taiwo is out for a month with a left ankle injury, while striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic has a more minor problem with his left ankle. Mark van Bommel and Kevin-Prince Boateng also have minor injuries.
