Referee leaves Sanchez Flores fuming
Atletico Madrid coach Quique Sanchez Flores could not hide his frustration at the decisions that went against his side at Villarreal on Sunday.
Atletico lost 2-0 at El Madrigal and admitted such disappointments "take away the desire to train".
Sergio Aguero found the net with a low finish in the third minute for Los Rojiblancos but the goal was chalked off for a close, but correct, offside call.
Instead the hosts went ahead in the ninth minute following a fine run from Nilmar.
The half ended on a controversial note with the Atletico players surrounding the referee at the whistle after Aguero was denied a penalty on the stroke of half-time.
Sanchez Flores came onto the pitch to get his players away, also having his own word with the official as they walked off, and paid for making his feelings known as he was sent to the stands for the second half.
He said: "I do not want to talk. Everything is very clear and very obvious and I should not talk.
"It makes it very difficult to speak and coach. I find it difficult to continue after things like this.
"The game was highly conditioned and that makes it so hard... It takes away the desire to train.
"I know refereeing is a difficult profession, but we played against many things that made it very complicated.
"It was one of those days where things went against us from the first minute."
His half-time demeanour would not have improved as Giuseppe Rossi doubled the home side's lead in the 52nd minute.
"We played a great first half and did things very well," said Sanchez Flores.
"The first half was one of our best of the season. But those decisions undermined the team and affected us mentally.
"We had to make a triple effort. The players entered the dressing room mentally down. It was a strange game.
"A lot of decisions are going against us. I am not going to be the one saying so, but our people are suffering and need to be defended."
In contrast, Villarreal coach Juan Carlos Garrido was thrilled with his side's display at El Madrigal and urged his players to continue in the same vein.
"We played a brilliant game," he said.
"We played very well and I think with this win we have taken a step forward.
"We must build on this, which remains our main objective.
"The team's commitment was truly remarkable and we are very happy about it."
He added: "We are where we want to be and we have shown that we can do great things, but we must keep working day by day."
Garrido reckons Sanchez Flores would be well advised to keep his thoughts on officials to himself in future.
"I do not believe that to complain so much is very ethical," he said.
"From my point of view, I try to respect the work of the referees.
"To protest constantly does not fall within the rules of the game: the only way to earn the respect of all is playing, not protesting."
