Reds win set the standard - Martinez
Latics moved four points clear of the relegation zone after beating Liverpool for the first time in their history, and face a real six-pointer at the Reebok on Saturday against another of their north-west rivals. After being massive underdogs against the Reds, Martinez is well aware the victory will have raised expectation levels ahead of the clash with the Trotters. But he insists the players will be up to the test - provided they can keep up their performance levels. Martinez said: "You can sometimes get a lucky result in football, but our performance against Liverpool was not lucky. It was the perfect performance. "We were brave from the very first minute, and we showed a great determination to win the football match. "To do that against a team like Liverpool shows what we are capable of and the talent in the squad - the challenge now is to show it on a consistent basis. "We are quite a level-headed group, and we are already looking ahead to the Bolton game. "The players know that if they do not repeat the performance from Monday night, then all that good work will have been for nothing." Games between Wigan and Bolton are always keenly-contested affairs, and the fact both teams are still deep in the relegation mire adds an interesting sub-plot. Despite the stakes - and the recent 0-0 draw between the two sides at the DW Stadium - Martinez expects the clash to be an entertaining encounter. He said: "Saturday's game will be completely different from Monday. It will be a typical local derby, very tense, and could go down to small details. "But we have played enough games of this nature and we'll be ready for the challenge. "Neither of the sides will be going out for the draw - both will be going out to win the game. "Even though both Bolton and ourselves are in positions in the table that are not too comfortable, the quality within the squads can provide a great spectacle. "As the home side, Bolton will see the game as an opportunity to get points on the board. "They have had a few great results recently, but we feel we have put in some great performances away from home without getting the full rewards. "The game is a unique opportunity for us to carry on the good work we did on Monday and look to add more consistency to our play. "We are all excited about the game and we know what it means to the fans. We'll be ready for the occasion." Martinez was also keen not to become embroiled in the 'war of words' taking place between Dave Whelan and Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez following Monday's game. Benitez told the Wigan chairman to mind his own business after Whelan claimed the Merseysiders were currently 'in a mess' - and Martinez plans to do just that. "Our chairman is the reason we are in the Premier League, and he is a passionate, passionate man," he added. "Sometimes things can be taken out of context, and a long conversation can produce one or two sensational headlines. "Mr Whelan is a football man who is the only chairman who has played and been a chairman in all four divisions, so if anyone deserves an opinion it is him. "But I have got too much work on my plate to be in a position to comment about other clubs. It is important we focus on ourselves now and try to achieve our own targets."
