The New York Red Bulls clinched a Major League Soccer playoff spot by beating the Philadelphia Union 1-0 on Thursday thanks to an own goal in the eighth minute.

New York, playing without suspended leading scorer Thierry Henry, moved into a tie with Houston and Colorado on 46 points and will have to wait for those teams to play their final games this weekend to determine their playoff seeding.

The Union remained in second place in the Eastern Conference with 48 points. Though assured of a playoff spot, they could finish as low as fourth in the Eastern Conference and eighth in the playoff seedings depending on the weekend's results.
