Defender Tim Ream was in the starting lineup for his first game with the U.S. national team while Aston Villa defender Eric Lichaj got his first start in the year-ending exhibition against South Africa.
U.S. coach Bob Bradley made nine changes to his starting lineup Wednesday from last month's 0-0 tie against Colombia, keeping only goalkeeper Brad Guzan and central defender Clarence Goodson.
In his first season with the New York Red Bulls, Ream played every minute of every league game. Lichaj arrived in South Africa after playing his first two Premier League games for Aston Villa, appearing late against Blackpool on Nov. 10 and Manchester United last Saturday.
