Ranger in court on assault charges

A Premier League footballer is due to go on trial today accused of assaulting two revellers and two police officers on a night out.

Newcastle player Nile Ranger, 21, is charged with assault and assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

The alleged incident is said to have taken place in Newcastle city centre on August 27 last year.

The striker, who lives in Forest Hall, North Tyneside, and has played on loan for Sheffield Wednesday and Barnsley and in Crystal Palace and Southampton's youth teams, denies the charges.

The trial at Newcastle Crown Court is scheduled to last two to three days.
