Racing beats Argentinos to go second
Unbeaten Racing Club moved into second place in the Argentine Apertura tournament standings after Giovanni Moreno's second-half header secured a 1-0 home win over Argentinos Juniors on Saturday.
Moreno climbed highest to direct a downward header into the net from a deep free kick in the 55th minute as Racing ended a run of five successive draws.
Racing moved to 24 points from 14 games, seven points behind Boca Juniors, which has a game in hand atop the standings.
Boca visits reigning champion Velez Sarsfield on Sunday and hosts Racing in the next round of fixtures in the 19-match tournament.
Tigre beat Colon 2-1 to put both teams on 21 points. Carlos Luna gave Tigre the lead with a close-range header after a scramble from a corner in the 37th minute.
Jorge Carrasco doubled the lead when he received the ball in the box and shot low into a corner of the net in the 74th.
Ivan Moreno finished at the back post a minute later for Colon, but Tigre held on.
Godoy Cruz extended its unbeaten home record with a 3-1 win over Estudiantes. A header from Ariel Rojas in the fifth minute and a close-range finish from Ruben Ramirez in the 15th provided an early cushion for the home team.
Playing without injured captain Juan Sebastian Veron, Estudiantes was given hope just before halftime when Godoy Cruz defender Jorge Curbelo deflected a cross into his own net, but Armando Cooper sealed the win with a goal in the 78th.
The result moved Godoy Cruz to 20 points, while Estudiantes is in last place on 10 points.
On Friday, Atletico Rafaela could only close the gap to Boca atop the standings by one point after stuttering to a scoreless draw at home to Belgrano.
Cesar Mansanelli missed a 40th-minute penalty and Ribair Rodriguez was sent off for Belgrano in the 62nd, but Rafaela failed to take advantage.
Racing's win on Saturday left Rafaela in third place on 23 points, trailing Boca by eight.
Also Friday, Independiente drew 2-2 at All Boys and Olimpo drew 1-1 at home to San Lorenzo in games between teams stuck in the bottom half of the standings.
