Italy coach Marcello Lippi says he won't call up Inter Milan forward Mario Balotelli just to make a statement against racism.

Balotelli, who is of Ghanian descent, has been the subject of racial taunts from fans at games in Italy for the past two seasons and Lippi has faced widening calls to select him for the World Cup in South Africa.

Lippi said Tuesday that "everyone knows that I am against any type of racism. Only one race exists - the human race - but a coach can't call a player up for that reason."

Lippi added that "when I judge that the time is right to call him up, I will do it solely and exclusively for technical reasons, not racial ones."
