Mexican club Pumas UNAM secured its place in the quarterfinals of the CONCACAF Champions League on Wednesday with a 1-0 home win over Panama's Tauro.
In Wednesday's other games, Colorado Rapids lost 2-0 at Mexico's Santos Laguna in Group B, putting the American club's chances of progressing in jeopardy, and Costa Rica's Herediano defeated Guatemala's Comunicaciones 4-1 in Group D.
Pumas' win means they top Group C and join fellow Mexican teams Morelia, Monterrey and Santos Laguna, as well as Major League Soccer clubs Toronto and Seattle Sounders, in the quarterfinals. The two remaining places will be decided in games on Thursday.
Pumas took the lead one minute before halftime when a Juan Carlos Cacho header deflected off Tauro defender Azmahar Ariano and fell into the net.
Group C finishes with Pumas on 11 points, Toronto 10, Dallas seven and Tauro five.
In Group B, Mexican league leaders Santos Laguna had the majority of the possession against the Rapids and took the lead through an Aaron Galindo goal in the 55th minute.
Alonso Escoboza beat his marker to the ball near the penalty spot to volley in Santos' second in the 67th.
Santos has won the group with 13 points, Colorado Rapids remain on seven, El Salvador's Metapan has six and Honduras' Real Espana five.
Metapan hosts Real Espana on Thursday, with the winner advancing to the last eight and eliminating Colorado. But if that game is a draw, the Rapids go through.
In a game with nothing at stake in Group D, Brazilian Jorge Barbosa scored twice for Herediano, with Cristian Montero and Jose Cordero getting the other goals. Comunicaciones had taken the lead in the 8th through Carlos Mejia. Both teams were already out of contention for the quarterfinals.
Monterrey finished top of Group D on 12 points, Seattle Sounders on 10, Comunicaciones seven and Herediano six.
