Bolton suffered their second defeat of the summer as a goal from Vicente Iborra earned Spanish side Levante a 1-0 win at the Reebok Stadium. Wanderers gave home debuts to Nigel Reo-Coker, Darren Pratley and Chris Eagles, while academy product Joe Riley had his first game at right-back after starring for the reserves in pre-season. Martin Petrov shot across goal early on and went close twice more later on. Ivan Klasnic also had a goal disallowed for offside after tapping in Petrov's cross-shot before a free-kick from the visitors rebounded off the crossbar and substitute Iborra netted from close range with 10 minutes remaining. Everton, meanwhile, lost 1-0 to Villarreal a Goodison Park courtesy of a superb Giuseppe Rossi free-kick. The Toffees dominated for large periods of the match but could not find a breakthrough and also saw Seamus Coleman carried off the pitch with an ankle injury shortly before half-time. QPR also suffered defeat on Friday night as Luton claimed a 3-1 win at Kenilworth Road. New signing DJ Campbell scored after just 29 seconds of his debut to put the visitors ahead but goals from Matthew Barnes-Homer, Amari Morgan-Smith and Adam Watkins earned the Blue Square Premier side the victory.
