Mario Rui scored in the first half to give Portugal a 1-0 win over New Zealand on Friday and a berth in the second round of the Under-20 World Cup.

Rui netted in the 31st minute, taking advantage of a well-timed through ball by striker Nelson Oliveira. Rui got in front of the New Zealand defenders inside the penalty area and placed a low left-footed shot into the far corner.

The victory gave Portugal first place in Group B with seven points from three matches, three points more than Cameroon, which also advanced after beating Uruguay 1-0 in Bogota.

New Zealand and Uruguay ended with two points each. New Zealand finished ahead of Uruguay on goal difference, so it may still advance as one of the four-best third-place teams in each of the six groups. Uruguay was eliminated.

Portugal controlled the action at the Pascual Guerrero stadium in Cali, and New Zealand - needing a victory to be assured of a place in the last 16 without depending on other results - relied mostly on counterattacks.
