Paulo Bento agrees to new two-year contract extension with Portugal
Paulo Bento has agreed a two-year contract extension to remain as Portugal coach until the end of Euro 2016.
The Portuguese Football Federation announced Wednesday that Bento's new deal will run through the 2016 European Championship in France. His current contract was to end after this year's World Cup in Brazil. Portugal is in Group G with Germany, the United States and Ghana.
The 44-year-old took charge of the national team in 2010, replacing Carlos Queiroz, and led the team to the semifinals of Euro 2012, where they lost to eventual winners Spain following a penalty shootout.
Bento also guided Portugal to this summer's World Cup finals, securing their place in Brazil with a 4-2 aggregate win over Sweden in the qualification playoffs after finishing second behind Russia in Group F.
The former Portugal, Sporting Lisbon and Benfica midfielder said on www.fpf.pt:: "I am honored and hugely proud to continue to serve my country as I have been doing. I've never hidden the fact that I feel very good working with the Portuguese Football Federation."
