Parma salvages road point at Atalanta
Atalanta missed a chance to climb into the top half of the Serie A standings after a 1-1 draw at home to Parma.
Thomas Manfredini spectacularly put Atalanta ahead in the fifth minute but Parma got a deserved equaliser through Gabriel Paletta before the hour mark to clinch a point.
The result leaves Atalanta in 11th place while Parma, winless since February 5, are six points clear of the relegation zone in 16th position.
Atalanta went into the encounter in Bergamo riding a five-match unbeaten run but having to do without five regular starters through injuries or suspension.
They enjoyed a strong start and took the lead early on when Paletta cleared a corner but only as far as Manfredini, who struck a stunning bicycle kick past Parma goalkeeper Nicola Pavarini.
Parma had a good chance to level the score in the 18th minute when Jaime Valdes' drive from 30 yards was kept out by Atalanta goalkeeper Andrea Consigli.
At the other end, Pavarini did well to clear Manolo Gabbiadini's goal-bound effort from outside the area.
The visitors pressed forward more aggressively and were almost rewarded on the half-hour mark. Alessandro Lucarelli found an unmarked Valdes in the box but he fired the ball over the bar.
Sebastian Giovinco had the last opportunity before the interval but his powerful effort did not trouble Consigli.
Parma continued to press after the restart and found the equaliser in the 55th minute when Paletta got his head behind Valdes' cross and his close-range effort beat Consigli.
Atalanta should have reclaimed the lead with 30 minutes remaining but top scorer German Denis nodded off target from Ezequiel Schelotto's cross.
The home side continued to press forward and three minutes from time Luca Cigarini's right-footed volley from 30 yards went just wide of the far post.
