Defending Greek league champion Panathinaikos has hired Jesualdo Ferreira as its new coach.

The team said Saturday that Ferreira signed a contract that runs through the 2011-12 season.

The 64-year-old Portuguese coach replaces Nikos Nioplias, who quit this week after poor Champions League results and a home draw against lowly Larissa last weekend. He will make his debut against Barcelona in the Champions League on Wednesday.

Ferreira last coached Spanish club Malaga, lasting only nine games before he was sacked on Nov. 2.
