The former coach of France's soccer team who was dismissed after the country's dismal showing at the World Cup is seeking $4.1 million in severance pay.

A Lawyer for Raymond Domenech says in Wednesday's L'Equipe newspaper that his client was made ''a scapegoat'' for his team's poor performance in South Africa, where it failed to advance past the group stage at soccer's biggest tournament.

Domenech was fired by the French football federation for making three ''grave errors'' at the World Cup. The federation said he failed to properly handle the expulsion of Nicolas Anelka from the squad and the subsequent player strike at a practice session, and that he refused to shake hands with South Africa's coach after France's loss in its final group match.
