Novara says it has fired Attilio Tesser as coach and appointed Emiliano Mondonico as his successor in a bid to lift the Serie A's bottom-place club out of the relegation zone.

Mondonico has not coached in the top flight since being sacked by Fiorentina seven years ago.

Novara owner Massimo De Salvo says ''I don't want to have regrets and I want to fight until the end.'' He says the team needed shaking up but took the decision ''with deep sadness in my heart.''

Tesser had been at Novara since 2009 and took the team to two back-to-back promotions. He becomes the 12th coaching change in the 20-team Serie A since August.

Mondonico quit as coach of Serie B club Albinoleffe in the offseason to focus on battling cancer.
