Carroll became the most expensive British player in history when he completed a £35million move to Anfield on transfer deadline day. The deal came too late for the Magpies to go back into the market for a replacement and Nolan concedes it is a blow to lose such a vital member of the squad. However, the Newcastle captain also felt pleased that his close friend had been given the opportunity to play for such a special club. "When we first heard about the move he asked me what I thought. You can imagine my reaction. I was delighted for him," Nolan told Liverpool TV. "I'm gutted we've lost him but delighted he's gone to a fantastic club." Questions have been raised over whether Liverpool paid too much for Carroll and whether he will be successful for the Reds. But Nolan is adamant that the 22-year-old will bring an added dimension to Liverpool's attack and play a key role in their future. Nolan added: "Liverpool are getting a top, top player. Obviously I've had a lot of texts and calls over the last day or so. I'm quite surprised at how pleased everyone is with it. He's only just burst onto the scene in the last six months. "He's going to be a great addition to what is a new start for Liverpool "Believe me you have got a top, top player. He's going to be one of the best. There's no-one like him in the league. "He'll score and create goals. He'll also show great desire and commitment. That's what Liverpool fans want and deserve."
