Ryan Taylor's second-half free kick gave Newcastle a 1-0 win over fierce local rival Sunderland in the Premier League on Saturday.

Taylor's inswinging delivery from the left evaded everyone in the box, sailing over Sunderland goalkeeper Simon Mignolet's outstretched arm and into the top corner in the 62nd minute.

Newcastle felt it should have been ahead already after Sebastian Larsson used his arm to keep out Joey Barton's goal-bound header in the first half, but referee Howard Webb gave a corner.

Newcastle manager Alan Pardew said Larsson should also have been sent off.

''By the players' reactions, you could tell it was a penalty,'' he said. ''I knew from the side that it was a penalty, and he has handled it, so he has to go off.''

Defender Phil Bardsley was sent off late on after receiving a second yellow card for a two-footed tackle on Fabricio Coloccini to complete a miserable day for Sunderland, who had started brightly with Stephane Sessegnon looking particularly lively.

Asamoah Gyan hit the top of the crossbar with a curling shot just before halftime and Newcastle goalkeeper Tim Krul made sharp saves from Sessegnon and fellow new signing Yohan Cabaye.

However, Newcastle took control in the second half and inflicted a second defeat in three derby games on Sunderland manager Steve Bruce.

''In a few people's eyes, it's unforgivable,'' Bruce said. ''I can understand that. People think deeply about it and they don't like being beaten by Newcastle, it's as simple as that.''
