Former London Irish rugby club boss Andy Martin has switched sports and been named the new chief executive of New Zealand Football.

Martin, who oversaw the recent buyout of London Irish by an Ireland business group, was chosen after a worldwide search which NZF said involved 179 candidates.

He replaces Mark Aspden who has acted as chief executive since the resignation of Grant McKavanagh in July.

Martin said NZF needs to address the declining results of the New Zealand national team which failed to qualify for this year's Confederations Cup and next year's World Cup.
