Moyes: We won't let Baines go
Baines on Wednesday night rubbished suggestions he might leave Goodison Park following fresh speculation linking him with the German giants. The former Wigan defender has been one of Everton's few standout players during a difficult first half of the campaign and has been tipped for an England recall. Yet while that may be attracting attention, Moyes - like the player himself - is adamant the 26-year-old will not be moving. Moyes said: "As far as I can see it can only be speculation. "There has been no contact but it seems to have got quite a lot of headlines. "He is in good form, undoubtedly. He is rightly getting admiration from big clubs but I can guarantee, to my office, there has been no contact. "We don't let our top players go, we keep them." Baines signed a five-year contract last summer and intends to honour that despite reports Bayern are preparing to table a £9million bid next month. "I tied myself to the club in the summer and I have no intentions at the moment of leaving the club," said Baines, who scored in a memorable 2-1 defeat of Manchester City on Monday. "I am not looking elsewhere and I am completely focused on what I am doing here." Moyes, however, could certainly use the money as he has admitted he will have to concentrate on loans to strengthen his squad in the January transfer window. Because of that he says rumours suggesting he is set to move for Middlesbrough's highly-rated David Wheater are untrue. "I have said many times I don't talk about players at other clubs," said Moyes. "But I don't know what people think I have said before. We won't be spending in the January window and I expect that player to cost money. "So, for us, that wouldn't be a goer." Another player who will not be joining Everton is United States star Landon Donovan. The Los Angeles Galaxy forward enjoyed a successful loan at Goodison during the Major League Soccer close season last year. Everton were keen to re-sign him but the player this week ruled it out, stating he needs a rest after a long spell of continuous club and international football. "He would have been good," said Moyes. "He would have fitted in quickly. "When you bring people on loan how do you know they are going to settle or how long it is going to take? "He came in and did it right away so my hope was you could have nearly thought of him as an injured player coming back after eight or nine months. "But it's not to be and I understand his views and wishes. "He said he might pop over to see us during his holiday but it will certainly not be to play." Everton will also have to get through most of January without their talisman Tim Cahill. The inspirational Australia midfielder will depart for the Asia Cup after the New Year's Day trip to Stoke. Cahill was hailed as a club legend by goalkeeper Tim Howard after scoring his ninth goal of the Premier League season at Eastlands on Monday and Moyes has also been effusive. "In my time here we have not had an awful lot to shout about but I think Tim Cahill is one who could stand up and say he has really played his part in this period," said Moyes, whose side host Birmingham on Boxing Day and visit West Ham two days later. "A few weeks ago I saw a drop in his energy and I was a bit worried about him. "But the other night he was back to his best. He was back to being young, youthful, working really hard for the team. "He always gives his full self and because of that he is appreciated." As well as looking for loan signings, Moyes would also like to tie midfielder Steven Pienaar to a new contract. The South African is in the final year of his present deal and has persistently been linked with other clubs. That has led to suggestions Moyes may sell next month to avoid losing him for nothing but the player was this week quoted saying how much he likes Everton. Moyes said: "I have always said if Steven wants to stay we would be delighted to help him. "I don't think anyone at Everton can question Steven's attitude or desire in the games. "We have got to hope between now and the end of the season we can make something else happen."
