Monterrey clinches 3rd place at Club World Cup
Mexican club Monterrey defeated Al-Ahly of Egypt 2-0 Sunday to capture third place at the Club World Cup.
Monterrey controlled the flow of play for the majority of the match and scored just three minutes in after an error by Al-Ahly goalkeeper Mahmoud Abou Elseoud.
Neri Cardozo flipped a pass to fellow midfielder Jesus Corona, who kicked the ball toward Abou Elseoud, who was unable corral it and let it slip past him in front of an open goal.
Corona then pounced on the loose ball and slotted it home uncontested to put Monterrey up 1-0.
Striker Cesar Delgado doubled Monterrey's lead in the 66th when he latched on to a pass from Cardozo on a break to score his third goal of the tournament.
Monterrey lost to Chelsea 3-1 in the semifinals on Thursday.
