Italian police have arrested one of the main AC Milan hooligans after finding homemade explosives in his car only hours before the club's crucial derby against Inter Milan.

Police stopped Marco Righetto near the San Siro stadium on Saturday and also found four knives, a baseball bat and pepper spray in his car, the ANSA news agency reports.

The 35-year-old Righetto is leader of the Ultra Tiger Commando group and was detained for illegally possessing explosive materials and weapons.

Milan holds a two-point lead over Inter atop the Serie A standings going into the game, which could have a decisive impact on the title race.
