Mick to Maierhofer: Prove me wrong

Austrian international Maierhofer, who joined Bristol City on loan earlier this week, was reported to have slammed McCarthy for his lack of action at Molineux. Maierhofer has only started two games since his arrival from Rapid Vienna in a £1.8million move last summer, but Wolves believe his comments have been lost in translation. McCarthy said: "I have been made aware of the comments and as ever I would always like to hear the recording because I don't believe everything that is put down on paper. "I haven't heard it from him and I am not bothered. The ones who aren't playing are always going to have a chew. "Good luck to him. Go and prove me wrong and him right by scoring five or six goals in the next month and have a blinding time at Bristol City and then come back." Rather than dealing with Maierhofer, McCarthy's focus is solely on trying to steer Wolves to Barclays Premier League survival. They face Aston Villa at Villa Park on Saturday, boosted by a crucial win against relegation rivals Burnley last weekend. But McCarthy added: "We won't stay up with the points that we have got. What we need is the similar performances that we have had over recent weeks and, more to the point, similar results to what we had last week. "Whatever games we win the teams below us have got to win two so let's pick off points and see what happens. I have never changed my tack on that. "We have got Villa on Saturday, let's get something out of that. Whatever we get out of that the teams below us have got to match us. They have then got to more than match us over the remaining games. "Every point really is a prisoner and hard earned just like every goal that is scored." McCarthy is relishing the clash with Villa and the chance to lock horns with Villa boss Martin O'Neill. He added: "Martin has dome a great job wherever he has been. Villa are chasing the fourth spot and we are trying to stay out of the bottom there. We are all wanting points for something. "There is a disparity of experience and ability, the way the clubs are, so we are the underdogs "But we will give them a hell of a game though. I don't mind being the underdog. It gives me more pleasure when I win." Wolves are boosted by the return to the squad of Welsh international midfielder Dave Edwards for the first time since December. Edwards, who suffered an ankle injury against Tottenham on December 12, made a successful comeback for the reserves against Arsenal last night. Striker Chris Iwelumo is also available again after returning from a month on loan at Bristol City, where he scored twice in seven appearances.
